Post-theme 5 : Design research

Lecture + seminar

The seminar and the lecture had different purpose or approach on the matter of Design research. The seminar was mostly focus on the empirical data, how to obtain it, what the differences. We came up with my group to the end that there were different type of data, therefore different of empirical data. Most likely the researcher is gonna drives the car by himself so he feels it. It is based on experience upon data we gathered. Those observations and measuring make the empirical data.
One sentence that stayed in my mind is that Collecting empirical data isn't the meaning of doing research. You have to use those data to do research about it.

Then we went on the Replicability subject. In a lot of cases this is not necessary to replicate, because after few years you cannot replicate in the exact same way. The aim isn't to get the same result but to have more specific group of human, more research. It is not only to understand what one did, but to follow his steps.  So you can follow his reasoning. Lots of experiences and research have been made in world war II and they have been really influenced by that time. Knowing that, we can framework their research understand it, replicate it in a very close way in order to understand their reasoning, their train of thought. As I mentioned in the seminar, in that case, the journey is more important than the destination.

When you use design in the process, this is a part of the research.
As a researcher you can choose to add empirical data.  In a research you can do a pre study that results as knowledge but this knowledge will be used for the actual research. This is a step by step process. That you have to use research in order to come up with a result, once you have it, it allows you and open the door to a new research that comes up with a new result that you are gonna be able to use for another research, etc. The last research being what you aimed for at the beginning. And this is what the lecturer confessed in writing your research is that you can't come up with all the steps of the ladder you needed to do, but only with the result of your last and actual research. The aim being to be as clear as possible.

In design research, researchers have to take care about what they use, how they use it and therefore and the test subject will use them (The turn to practice, not the way we thing it would be). For example in Anders's research,The gps would blur the original question. There are some part of the research that have to be removed in order to keep the original question. For example for the gps, it would become the main attention. It needs that the design process doesn't alternate anything or doesn't become to point of attention.

  1. You have a lot of sloppy typos in this text such as "knowledge will be use" where it should be "used". So I think you can work on reviewing your text before submitting it.

However, I do think you captured the core of what design research is about. Especially liked "the journey is more important than the destination" recap and how you describe ways to manipulate the research, why one would do so and how it's relevant in design research. So you get a minus for delivery but a plus for content.

  2. Hi! I really enjoyed reading your reflection! I think same like you from the lecture I got this deeper understanding that only collecting empirical data and doing experiments does not mean one is doing a research, one has to use that data for building up the whole research design. I found it interesting when Anders told about the points of study and matter he left out just because he thought it would blur out respondents perception and maybe put the whole research in the dim light. Thanks for your thoughts!

  3. Hi! Thanks for your interesting reflection. I enjoyed reading it!
To elaborate on the process of design research, in comparison to other researches, the process of design research is a significant part of the study. As I understood it during the seminar, this is one of the main differences between design research and other researches. There are constant adjustments made after the results that eventually contribute to the empirical data. This is also what makes the process of this research so messy and long.

  4. I really enjoyed reading your reflection, you seem to have grasped the theme quite well! I think this week was pretty interesting and something new, as I hadn't thought about design research before. I agree with what you wrote about replicability, it might not be necessary and after a few years it will be very difficult to do it in the same was as technology and conditions change. It might not be about being able to replicate it, but as you also say, about following the researchers steps and understanding the logic of why he or she did things, being able to see the process. Like you said "the journey is more important than the destination".

  5. You had a pretty well summary of design research. I think this type of research is very interesting. Because of the long and messy process. I think the pre study in the research is a great way of collecting empirical data and to see if the intention with the design research is relevant or not. The iterative process during the research is also a good way to come across new knowledge.

  6. Thank you for your nice reflection. I like the point you made about the replicability a lot. In the end it may not be about getting the same results, but broaden the knowledge in a specific field, based on earlier researches. According to that you are completely right: The journey is more important than the destination. Or at least as least as important, because the outcome or a replication can be a valuable addition to an earlier theory.

  7. I agree the design processes is very important for the research. Through the processes the researcher seeks to produce knowledge that can be used in problem-solving or real problems. New gained knowledge can help to solve and improve existing systems. The aim is to solve problem with knowledge that you gain throughout the research processes. Design research is solution focused! This findings or solutions can (perhaps) be applied in various contexts.
I enjoyed reading your post, well done!

  8. Hello, and thank you for interesting blog posts! The replicability is a topic discussed in many of our blogs, so I'm not going to further comment on that. Another interesting topic, however, is limiting the approach in design research! As the approach allows generally more freedom when it comes to adjusting, the decisions of limiting the topic somehow have to be even better justified when thinking the main purpose of the study. That is why I like you brought up Anders's decision about leaving out the GPS from the study, as it would not have benefitted the chosen phenomena. I think this is one of the hardest parts of design-driven research, since freedom also brings more responsibility into the picture.

Thank you for great discussion around the topic! :)
